MASTODON Launches ‘Black Tongue’ Beer

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have teamed up with the the London, England-based Signature Brew to create Black Tongue, an 8.3% Double Black IPA named after one of the band's songs. Signature Brew's description: "Rumbling smoky notes are offset by the elixir of misbehaving punchy hops. Mosaic and Magnum hops to the front, with Carafa Special 3 Malt and Pale on the baseline, this is our biggest and most powerful creation to date. The band wanted to create a 'pallet crusher' and that's certainly what has been delivered. A beer for enjoying slowly, letting the bombardment of flavour and intensity hit your tongue and explode with every sip." For more information, go to this location. Launched in August 2011, Signature Brew works with musicians to create custom brews tailored to the artists' specific tastes. According to Bloomberg, the idea behind Signature Brew is simple: Let a band sample a range of beers, write down what its members like and don't like, and then create a brew specifically for them.

MASTODON To Enter Studio In November

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have issued the following update: "MASTODON has been busy jamming every day writing and arranging the next studio album. We have quite a few songs and ideas that are taking some time to nail down what we think will make it to the next full-length. "There will be no more touring this year. We will hit the studio in November to hopefully finish by the end of year." Asked about the progress of the songwriting sessions for MASTODON's follow-up to 2011's "The Hunter", guitarist Bill Kelliher told Artisan News: "We haven't really come to the lyrical concepts yet. That's usually the last thing that comes. We're usually focused on the music and getting all the parts and everything sounding 'balls to the wall,' you know what I mean?! That's the most important thing. And then once we've got all that settled and recorded, we're always scrambling for lyrics and ideas and stuff. We're getting a little bit better at it, and I think Brann's [Dailor, drums] got a lot of ideas for vocal melodies and stuff like that. I'll play the riff and he'll kind of sing along, and I'm, like, 'OK, that sounds really proggy, but really awesome.' I'm really, really excited about it. But as far as what it's gonna be dealing with, it's a little too early to tell; it's pretty fresh stuff right now. I mean, we've got some demos, but they're really, really rough." Kelliher also spoke about possible lyrical themes that might be covered on MASTODON's next album. He said: "Death always makes for really good story telling. It's kind of the theme that we have a lot in our music. We've had a lot of friends

We started just putting ideas down on tape, so to speak. We have about 25 to 30 songs that are ready for the new record. We're obviously not gonna use all 30 of them, but we're in a much better place than we've ever been as far as being prepared during pre-production for an album. We'd like to get the record finished by the end of the year and have it out as soon as Christmas and all the holidays are over with — maybe, like, March or April, it would be great to have the new record out and then do a brand new tour on some new music."

MASTODON’s SANDERS: ‘We’ve Got The Skeletons Of Enough Songs For An Entire Album’

In a brand new interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor-in-chief Rick Florino, singer and bassist Troy Sanders of Atlanta progressive metallersMASTODON spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's follow-up to 2011's "The Hunter", tentatively due in early 2014. Asked if the new material picks up where "The Hunter" left off or if it is a new avenue altogether, Sanders said: "To a degree, I'm going to say it's picking up where we left off. It's kind of an open game or a clean slate. Every single day I go to band practice, I feel like I'm going to a chef's table for a food tasting because there's an element of the unknown. I'm fascinated with that. Either Chef Brent or Chef Bill will present a tasty riff dish of the day and we all lock in and go for it. Nothing that is out of the box will be turned away."
