One of the most legendary frontmen in extreme metal, Max Cavalera of Sepultura, after leaving the band in '96, has found his brother once more in 2008 and ever ...
On October 5, Metal Mark of SkullsNBones.com conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, KILLER BE KILLED, SEPULTURA). You can now watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).
On "Pandemonium", the upcoming third album from CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, the band led by brothers and founding SEPULTURA members Max and Igor Cavalera:
Max: "It's pretty good, man. It was fun to play with [Igor] and make a fast record. We decided to just go for it like we used to play before. When we first started this thing, we loved playing fast and throwing down very aggressive stuff. And this record, 'Pandemonium', was based on that — raw energy and adrenaline of the brothers playing metal. And it's cool that we found that after, I don't know, 30 years, we can still go back to that metal place and take that energy out and put it into a record. So I think people are gonna be stoked when they 'Pandemonium', because I think it's, for sure, the heaviest and most aggressive out of the CAVALERA stuff. But it's [also] probably some of the most aggressive stuff I've done in my whole life."
On what it was like to have no contact with Igor for 10 years following Max's departure from SEPULTURA:
Max: "It was hard, those 10 years that we didn't speak. It was really depressing for us. I hid it from the world, but inside I was very sad that I didn't speak with my own brother. And people were always asking about that, and I would always say, 'I don't know. He's doing his thing, and I'm doing thing. We're living in separate worlds.' So when we got back together, it was awesome, it was a great feeling. It was like a black cloud had [been] lifted. And then we decided to give it a go at playing music [together] again, which is another cool thing — create CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, which was started in '07, I think, and has not stopped. But we do very things very differently [from SOULFLY]. SOULFLY tours a lot more — we play everywhere and every shithole. SOULFLY is relentless [when it comes to touring], Igor doesn't like that. And I don't blame him. He's got more of a slowed down lifestyle. He lives in London now and he's got [his] family there. I respect that, so we do CAVALERA tours a little bit moderate. But there will be some tours. I think in January we'll do an American tour."
"Pandemonium", on November 4 (one day earlier internationally) via Napalm Records. The CD was produced by John Gray, who has previously worked with SOULFLY.
CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, the band led by brothers and founding SEPULTURA members Max (also of SOULFLY) and Igor Cavalera, has set "Pandemonium" as the title of its third album, due in October via Napalm Records. The CD was produced by John Gray, who has previously worked with SOULFLY.
During an appearance on the "Metal Hammer" magazine show on TeamRock Radio, Max stated about the upcoming effort: "It's called 'Pandemonium' and it's very, very heavy — the heaviest of all the three. I was really possessed to get Igor back to his 'Arise' [SEPULTURA] era of drumming, everything fast."
Max recently told HardRockHaven.net about "Pandemonium": "There aren't really any guests on the album. Nate [Newton] from CONVERGE plays bass and he sings one song called 'The Crucible' — it's about the witches of Salem; we did a song about that. Nate's got a great voice, 'cause he sings for DOOMRIDERS and I love his voice, so I got him to sing one song. That's the only guest. The CAVALERA album is really more about me and Igor [Cavalera, drums], the brothers, thrashing. This one is almost grindcore. I was really a dictator in the studio with Igor to try to keep him from going into the groove and tried to keep him playing fast; I wanted him play fast for most of the record. So every time he'd go into the groove, I would be, like, 'Fuck the groove! Get out of the groove! Go back to the fast shit.' And I succeeded, man. It's a really brutal album. I think it's definitely the most brutal of all the CAVALERA albums and it's definitely gonna turn some heads when people hear this one."

Max Cavalera checked in from the studio to give an update.
On working with his brother:
Max: "It has always been some kind of killer magic whenever I play with my brother. We have a special connection that comes out through the music and the crowd reacts to it in an insane way."
On the recording process:
Max: "Pretty much, I have to get into CAVALERA CONSPIRACY mode. I wanted the new album to be faster and thrashier with the concept of Old Babylon. As far as recording equipment, we use everything! We don't rely too much on Pro Tools like other bands. All Igor's tracks are live drums. The energy is all there and we play all the guitars and sing of top of it, so in a way, it's like the old ways of recording."
On feelings of pressure regarding the band's third album:
Max: "There's pressure but I also like the challenge. I think it is the CAVALERA CONSPIRACY's most and intense and fastest record yet. I am very proud of it."
CAVALERA CONSPIRACY recently recruited Nate Newton of CONVERGE as its new recording bassist.
Said Gray: "This is by far the fastest and heaviest record I have ever had the pleasure of working on with Max Cavalera.
"Max, Igor and Marc [Rizzo, guitar] were on the same page musically from the moment they walked in the door, and recording this album was a very smooth process.
"I had never worked with Igor Cavalera before and I was very impressed with his ability to work out the arrangements with Max and get some extremely complex drum parts done live with hardly any re-takes necessary. Marc Rizzo, as always, was spot-on and a true guitar virtuoso.
"I love to work with Marc because he always pushes himself to perfection, but he is very down to earth and keeps things light when he's under pressure.
"What can I say about Nate Newton — he killed it on the bass tracks with very little back and forth. I'm really impressed with his talent, and I look forward to meeting him some day."
Added Rizzo: "The new CAVALERA CONSPIRACY record was amazing to record... Definitely a brutal and fast third record!!!"
Stated Newton: "It was a lot of fun to be a part of this record. For me, it was a challenge to learn the songs sight unseen and record them. It was a pretty interesting look into the way Max writes songs and I am glad to have been a part of it."

"Blunt Force Trauma" sold around 5,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 122 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band's debut CD, "Inflikted", opened with 9,000 units to enter the chart at No. 72.
