Fourteen years after their last release, the Norwegians HADES ALMIGHTY return with an EP consisting of three tracks while the line-up of the band now comprises of Ask Ty (KAMPFAR) on vocals, Remi Andersen on drums, percussion & vocals, and Jørn Inge Tunsberg on guitar, keys & bass.
Starting with the title track “Pyre Era Black!” which creates a very dark surrounding atmosphere, with its monotonous and mid-paced tempo. Chanting vocals escorting the deep singing of Ask Ty, while the ghostly and mysterious colors, paint the canvas and seem to transfer the desired emotions to the listener. “Funeral Storm” is groovy, merging the deep screams with a more ‘heavy’ guitar in the beginning. Mid-song, the tempo remains the same but the guitar switches to ‘darker’ versions and more gloomy ones. The riffing switches maintain the interest but not for long. The third and last track of the EP, the nine-minute “Bound”, is also mid-paced, deep, while the singing performance clearly stands out within the song structure. The guitar playing a significant role along with the vocal parts, creating an emotional tone to the darkness proclaimed by the former tracks.
In general, this EP is interesting in its atmospheric approach, the beautiful vocal parts and changes in tempo and riffing. The monotonous atmosphere, playfully dances inbetween the boundaries of monotonous and on the other hand boringly repetitive. The decision is up to you!
