One of the expected albums of this year is the new MELECHESH “Enki”. The strong – even violent – introductory song “Tempest Temper Enlil Enraged” sets the stage for the aggressive outcome of the five years passed since their last full-length appearance (“The Epigenesis”); the band originally from Israel and recently relocated in the Netherlands made a comeback that resembles to a sandstorm coming from the East.
Duality and the double meaning of things along with order, chaos and the origins of mankind are the main focus of the philosophy behind “Enki”. Mystical themes of Assyrian mythology frame the oriental mystical paths MELECHESH walk on.
“The Pendulum Speaks”, the second shortest track is a mid-tempo composition which ‘rocks’ a lotand in which Ashmedi surprises with his snakelike vocals while “Lost Tribes” – where Max Cavalera makes a guest appearance – successes it racing rather more aggressively. Hypnotizing riffing characterizes “Multiple Truths” and epic eastern atmospheres define “Enki – Divine Nature Awoken” along with vocals from SakisTolis of ROTTING CHRIST which typify it as more eerie. “Metatron and Man” is super aggressive and super groovy involving melodies that listeners would find it hard to refrain from playing over and over in their heads.
Eastern influences and infusions of culture in music are pretty visible and profound in “The Palm The Eye And Lapis Lazuli” justifying the roots of origin of the band. Sitar and saz dress the melodies of “Doorways to Irkala” providing a tranquilizing intermission before the longest track on “Enki”. Last and most epic is “The Outsiders” which is an evil result of eastern mid-tempo melodies, eerie vocals and mythical discourses. Sinister ancient gods dance on ritual mesmerizing melodies in the end of Enki’s narration.
Generally, a multidimensional album continuing the steady course of MELECHESH’s career. Varying from short mid-tempo compositions to epic long tracks, shifting from metal to rock infused with groove constitute “Enki” as a ‘complete’ release that can satisfy every extreme metal fan with an inclination towards creative approaches to contemporary metal music.
