Terra Tenebrosa, the avant-garde/black metal band from Sweden, produced the most mindfuck album of the year back in 2011. I remember listening to “The Tunnels” and getting haunted by their spiritual, sick, atmospheric melodies. Without being extreme and heavy, the band reassigned the meaning of horror in music records. This February, the sky got darker, as “The Purging” was released worldwide. Knowing the sound of the band, it is imaginable that the new record would be a killer one. Their second full-length album is officially on, spinning in my player since the very first day.

“The Purging” includes ten songs, juggling between experimental dark songs and more blackened ones. First of all, the right aural background is created (“The Redeeming Teratoma“). Then from this moment and on, we have some exceptional black metal riffs, combined with uncanny and ghostly harsh vocals. Songs like “Black Pearl In A Crystalline Shell“, can be included into some “best extreme songs of 2013” disc collection, as they blow our minds into thousands of pieces because of the diversity the band used into them. To begin with, the song begins with speedy riffs, advancing rapidly to a doomy and atmospheric explosion. Those alternations are quite addictive to the ears of a listener with combined musical roots.

As far as the production and Terra Tenebrosa’s sound concerning, I find their work immaculate. They’ve been using effects in voice recordings, but the vocals sound natural and deep. The drumming work is worth mentioning too, as the rhythm section is definitely from another planet. “The Nucleus Turbine” points all these out, giving light to the dark road to ‘The Purging’ song, with a very heavy and sticky guitar riff. As the minutes go by, the listener gets absorbed in dark and emotionless abysses. ‘The Purging’ closes strong, just like it begins, and the journey doesn’t end here, as we seek for more, listening to the album all over again till we get another one from Terra Tenebrosa.

One word tends to describe the record’s music: sickness! Sickness with its good meaning, reflecting soul’s dark moments, our need for a horrid and grotesque soundtrack for our life. However, “The Tunnels” (the group’s first record) is slightly a better one, as they had the benefit to shock the audience back then. We now had the expectations of what to hear from ‘Terra Tenebrosa’, without that effect negatively. ‘The Purging’ is totally recommendable, but be warned; the record is too addictive for ‘easy-listeners’ to enjoy!
