It hasn’t been long since the Germans’ last record, which realy crossed the borderlines of musical perfection, as long as melodies and flowing structures are concerned.
Long Distance Calling have evolved throughout the past couple of years and record after record they keep the interest at its highest. Using their well known recipe for building song-tales that are based into time changes and of course melodies and riffs of the top class, as no band in their genre does with such a smooth and careless way, they have provided us with many important and pleasing releases so far.
As it seems, though, it was time for them to move forward with their sound. The big change came with the coming of Martin Fischer, who took over the vocal duties as a full time member for “Flood Inside”. Having a short of tradition to “use” a guest vocalist for one song in every record they made so far (Vincent Cavanagh of Anathema for “Flood Inside”) the band decided to move one step further and give their new songs a refreshment that would actually alter the way they sound and of course the way they are perceived as a band.
Fischer’s voice really gave another look to the sound of LDC not by being something extravagant or something extremely unique. On my first encounter many doubts came to surface and questioned my taste for what I heard. Although, it didn’t convince me at first, as the listening sessions went on I started to realise that there wasn’t anything so different at all.
Everything that was LDC to my ears was there…The flawless instrumental orgies, the melodic lines, the time signature changes and this outerspace atmosphere and vibe were all there. So, all I had to do, to overcome this new change ar let’s say the presence of vocals by a vocalist, was to listen to it as another instrument that gave more melody to the songs! Even more melody? Yes of course, please!
As for the production aspects there is nothing bad to comment because one of the reasons I love LCD’s releases is their productions and this almost jamming feeling they put out having great and crystal clear sound!
A new band with many expectations has restarted their carrier! Give them the chance because they deserve attention and respect!
