It has been a while since the band debut album and now the greek doom metalers has released their new record “King Of Cynical Control” giving another kind of doom more personalized and filled with a unique sound. But let’s cut to the chase.
First track come for a few seconds calmly but soon to give the rush, No News, Good News and The Pessimist move closely to “A Perfect Cirle” attitude with colorful bass lines and atmospheric guitar moments. The vocals give a mystic touch but hard to tell in good or evil ways creating surely a dark and mysterious tone. Next comes King of Cynical Control which I can say it really impressed me. Although it’s a more classy doom track it appears strange to the ears and unfitting. Too rough and “simple”. Especially when you hear Song for the Black sheep (the guitar section in this one is an amazing work, with spacey and traveling tunes) which I think could be perfect without the vocals. The whole feeling and sensation this particular track have i think would be better if it was left with lyrical absence. III – Your Fallacy would be the best song of the album if you want to describe King Of Cynical Control from its musical aspect, having in my opinion, all the ingredients of each separate tracks in one pot! The vocals in this one are a combination of darkness and sadness. A classic doom feeling but in Infidel’s way and approach. Nothing more to say about Shades Of Solitude, close to the first track but with a strong minus: the end of the track, by which I mean cuts too steep. Infidel has proved the they could “dress” perfectly a song and I don’t understand why they couldn’t make a more soft end.
Generally speaking the record is excellent! Beautiful composition, emotional parts and music feelings they really prove that they are something out of any kind of labels and have a unique sound and personality. I personally admired the work of Kostopoulos and Kissadjekian but despite the fact that Poussios has a very expressive and strong voice the only negative part is that he seems to be out of track in some parts, like he put lyrics at the very last moment. They’re very few but…unfortunately they make you lose the feeling. A bonus plus is the production. I don’t know if they originally as a band wrote the songs to be played in that particular order but one song is perfectly chain to the other giving a flawless hearing. Great record not to be missed.
