SLAYER’s TOM ARAYA: JEFF HANNEMAN’s Death ‘Has Changed Everything’

Brian Aberback of New Jersey's Steppin' Out magazine recently conducted an interview with SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. An excerpt from the chat follows below. Steppin' Out: You just started doing press for this tour and know that everyone will be asking about [late SLAYER guitarist] Jeff [Hanneman]. How do you feel talking about everything that's gone on in the past six months? Tom Araya: You know you're going to get those questions whether we decide to do press or not. If you don't do interviews, no one is aware that you're doing a tour. It wouldn't bother me if Kerry [King, guitar] did all the interviews. [laughs] But when I do interviews, I enter them with an open mind and try to answer the questions the best I can. Steppin' Out: Did you have any idea that Jeff was seriously ill before he died? Tom: Nobody ever thought about Jeff passing away. I thought about him getting better and getting back onstage. We've been talking about getting back in the studio for the last two years, with Jeff being a part of that. It was something to be continued. Steppin' Out: Have you thought about folding the band following his death? Tom: His death has changed everything. Knowing that Jeff was on the sidelines, I was OK. It was always about, "Jeff is going to come back." Then he passed away and it was more like, "Why am I doing this now?" It changed my attitude about some things. Someone said, "It's really great that you decided to tour and move on," but these tours were scheduled in advance. At the end of this tour, Kerry and I are going to have to sit down and talk as far as how we want to move forward, if we want to move forward. There hasn't been time for me and Kerry to talk. We've been on the road but we haven't really sat down and talked about it. Jeff and I collaborated a lot, and he offered me the opportunity to write or to collaborate with him. Like I said, there are things we have to discuss to either move forward or just to figure something out. Steppin' Out: How tough was it playing the first shows after Jeff's death this summer in Europe?

MORBID ANGEL: ‘Covenant’ Tab eBook Available

In the continuing celebration of the 20th anniversary of the MORBID ANGEL album"Covenant", the Tampa, Florida-based death metal band and World Management have announced that Angel Fortiz has officially completed the transcriptions for a new tab eBook of the album. The eBook features authentic transcriptions with notes, tabs, chords, lyrics andTrey Azagthoth's liner notes. Check out a trailer for the eBook below. To order a copy, go to this location. MORBID ANGEL will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its best-selling album, "Covenant", by embarking on the "Covenant: 1993-2013" tour. In 1992, MORBID ANGEL was the first death metal band to be signed to a major record company (Giant Records/Warner Brothers) and "Covenant" was the group's first release for that label in the USA. The LP was issued on June 22, 1993 and went on to garner great critical and commercial success. On the "Covenant: 1993-2013" tour, MORBID ANGEL will play the "Covenant" album in its entirety and, after a short intermission, some additional surprise classic cuts. Further, there will be special commemorative items produced exclusively for this tour. Asked if it ever irritates him that some MORBID ANGEL fans always expect the band to record a sequel to the group's most successful albums, like "Altars Of Madness", "Blessed Are The Sick" or "Covenant", Vincent told MetalCrypt.com this past January: "We have stuff like that. Listen, we are a very wide band; we are not narrow. There are a lot of narrow bands out there these days, and you know how their records are going to sound before they are even released. You will know exactly what they are going to be and the fans like that. These types of bands don't take any chances; they don't really experiment at all. They just play the same record, you know, there's only a few notes different but it's still the same thing over and over again. And then there are bands that specialize in that, and that's what the listeners are looking for. They should support those kinds of bands. We are just not that kind of band and never have been." MORBID ANGEL's latest album, "Illud Divinum Insanus", sold around 3,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 141. The effort marked MORBID ANGEL's first CD to feature Vincent since 1995's "Domination".

SLAYER: ‘Jeff Hanneman Memorial Celebration’ To Be Held In Los Angeles

The Jeff Hanneman Memorial Celebration will take place on Thursday, May 23 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will be free and open to the public on a first-come, first-in basis (subject to venue capacity). All ages are welcome, and paid parking will be available around the venue. Members of SLAYER released a statement on Thursday (May 9) saying that Hanneman died of alcohol-related cirrhosis. The guitarist had actually not been playing with SLAYER for more than two years since he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, also known as flesh-eating disease, from a spider bite in his backyard in January 2011. The infection ravaged the flesh and tissues of Hanneman's arm, leading to numerous surgeries, skin grafts and intense periods of rehab that forced him into semi-retirement and left him near death at several points.

HALFORD Discusses FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Collaboration, Upcoming JUDAS PRIEST Album

Singer Rob Halford of British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST was interviewed on this past Friday's (May 10) edition of Eddie Trunk's"Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM. A transcript of the chat follows below. Eddie Trunk: I saw you get up and do [JUDAS PRIEST's "Rapid Fire"] with METALLICA [on May 2 at Revolver Golden Gods in Los Angeles]. Rob Halford: Yeah, was another great night. Let me quickly bring everybody up to speed about that. Out of the blue, I get this really cool e-mail from the guys from FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, and much like you do in metal, you know, you just throw things out there and see what happens. And they said they had this cool song ["Lift Me Up"] and they wondered whether there was a chance of me jumping in and doing some singing on the track. And I asked them to send it to me, and, man, as soon as I heard it, I just lit up. I said, "I want to be a part of this." So a few days later, I was in Las Vegas recording it.
