PATTON, LOMBARDO RESURRECT FANTÔMAS
Star-studded noise-mongers FANTÔMAS — who feature in their ranks FAITH NO MORE frotnman Mike Patton, MELVINS guitarist Buzz Osborne, MR. BUNGLE bassist Trevor Dunn, and ex-SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo — have been confirmed for the first-ever RockOut festival, set to take place December 6 at Espacio Broadway in Santiago, Chile. Also scheduled to appear on the bill are DEVO and PRIMUS, among others.
In a recent interview with Prog Sphere, Lombardo stated about FANTÔMAS: "It's one of the most amazing groups ever. I love that band. And I hope that Mike will say, 'Let's do this [again]!' My door is open. Mike and I, you know, we communicate. We have a great friendship."
Speaking to A.V. Club in 2008, Patton was asked if there was "still action with" FANTÔMAS. "It's slowed down a little bit because we've gotten distracted with other things, but I've started writing a new record," he said. "It's gonna be a bit of a stretch for us. I want to try to make an all-electronic record. I'm trying to figure out how to do that, the practicalities of doing that. So I don't think it will be out [for some time], but the band is still very much in my mind."
The brainchild of Patton, "Fantômas" is an anti-hero from a series of pre-WWI French crime novels, sometimes dubbed the "lord of terror."
FANTÔMAS' latest album, "Suspended Animation", came out in June 2005. The effort contained 30 tracks, each titled after a different day in the month of April.
FANTÔMAS' three previous releases regaled listeners with a sci-fi homage ("Fantômas", 1999), a celebration of the best in film composition ("Director’s Cut", 2001) and a one-song album ("Delirium Cordia", 2004).
FAITH NO MORE, which reunited in 2009 for a series of sold-out performances and international festivals, is currently recording its first full-length album since 1997's "Album Of The Year". An April 2015 release is expected.
TONY IOMMI Says BLACK SABBATH’s Performance At London’s Hyde Park Could Be Band’s Last-Ever Concert
BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi has told Metal Hammer magazine that the band's headlining appearance at the Barclaycard British Summer Time festival at London's Hyde Park may turn out to be the legendary heavy metal group's final gig.
The July 4 event will see SABBATH perform alongside SOUNDGARDEN, FAITH NO MORE, MOTÖRHEAD and SOULFLY on the festival's main stage.
"It could be the last ever SABBATH show," Iommi told Metal Hammer. "I don't want it to be, but there's nothing really planned touring-wise after that show, so for all we know that could be it, really. To be honest, I don't want to be touring to this extent too much longer, because it makes me feel so bad."
Iommi has had to go back to England every six weeks for treatment ever since being diagnosed with lymphoma in 2012, forcing him and SABBATH to work around both the treatments and the recovery time needed afterward.
"I'm at a stage now where I have no support, which means I have to see whether the cancer is coming back or if it's still there or what," he said. "I just don't know. It's a bit of a worry. After we finish this tour, I'll go in and have scan, so we'll see what that shows up."
"But the show at Hyde Park will a great way to end the European tour," he added. "It has a really great bill, with a really good mix of people. We haven't made any specific plans as the gig is a way off yet, but I think it'll be special."
Last year, Iommi said that his ongoing treatments and their physical side effects could severely restrict SABBATH's activities, explaining, "I can't commit to doing another two years or anything like that. I have to play it as it comes now."
Singer Ozzy Osbourne told The Pulse Of Radio that Iommi never let his treatments slow him down during the making of the recent SABBATH album, "13". "My hat goes off to him 'cause he really is Iron Man," he said. "I mean, that chemotherapy knocks you sideways, you know. I mean, when my wife had cancer a few years back, she was having three chemo things a month and it would knock the life out of — literally every time she'd have a treatment, she'd have a seizure. It's scary stuff. But he came down, plugged in and carried on. He's my hero, I swear to God he is."
"13", the first SABBATH release in 35 years to feature Iommi, Osbourne and Geezer Butler playing together, was released in June 2013 and landed the band its first-ever No. 1 album in the U.S., also topping the chart in the U.K. and a number of other countries.
The band also earned three 2014 Grammy Award nominations, for "Best Rock Album" for "13", plus "Best Metal Performance" and "Best Rock Song" for "God Is Dead?"
The making of "13" was marked by several dramatic events, including drummer Bill Ward's withdrawal from the project over a contractual dispute.
Butler told Revolver that he started writing a song for "13", called "Hanging By A Thread", that was inspired by Iommi's illness. He explained, "It was very much about dying, about giving your last breath and passing your spirit on." But the track didn't make it onto the album because, Butler said, "We never came up with the finished thing."
SABBATH completed a 10-date North American run on April 26 in Los Angeles.

MIKE PATTON Scores ‘The Vatican Tapes’
FAITH NO MORE singer Mike Patton's career as a film composer continues to expand with the news that the singer/multi-instrumentalist will now turn his attention to scoring "The Vatican Tapes", a horror film starring Michael Pena ("American Hustle", "Tower Heist") and Djimon Hounsou ("Gladiator", "Blood Diamond").
The news of Patton's upcoming scoring project comes as his work on "The Place Beyond The Pines" has been included in the group of eligible film scores for the 86th Academy Awards and was deemed one of 2013's best film scores by Film Music magazine, which said "Patton proves himself to be equally audacious as a film composer as he is a rock star," adding "while jarring at first to hear this miasma of religious choruses, grunge chords and experimental string writing over 'Pines'' rural landscape, Patton's approach turns out to be completely inspired in conveying the sins of the fathers…"
Patton discusses music and film and the worlds of popular music vs. film composition in the Sundance Film Festival panel, Collective Conversations: Sound & Vision – A Panel Discussion on Music in Film. The William H. Macy-moderated panel, which takes place on January 19 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Collective, will also include Craig Wedren, Alexander Ebert, Mica Levi and BT.

MAX CAVALERA: SEPULTURA Was ‘Taken Hostage’ By ANDREAS KISSER
Thomas Stanley Orwat Jr. of RockMusicStar recently conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, SEPULTURA, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
RockMusicStar: You have recently written an autobiography. When will it be released?
Max: Yes, it's coming out in February in America. It's called "My Bloody Roots", and it's out in Brazil already and Poland, and it's going to come out in America in February. I've been working on this book for the last three years. I did thousands of interviews, and Dave Grohl [FOO FIGHTERS, NIRVANA] did the introduction of the book. He wrote a really cool introduction; it's really funny. It's a great book; it's got a lot of cool people in it, like Mike Patton [FAITH NO MORE], David Vincent [MORBID ANGEL], Sharon Osbourne. It's an amazing book. It's gonna tell my whole story. It's gonna tell about the split; I finally tell the truth about why I left SEPULTURA. All the stuff that happened, all the tragedies that happened, and then there's some funny stuff, like puking on Eddie Vedder [PEARL JAM], and shit that happened in my career and my life. They're all crazy stuff. Everything's gonna be in the book, and it's going to be great for people to read that.
RockMusicStar: Wow, I can't wait. That's awesome. How is it doing in Brazil?
Max: It's doing really good, man. It's gonna probably make the best-selling list of the Brazilian books, and we're very excited about that. People in Brazil are very excited, they are reading the shit out of it. I get a lot of comments on Facebook, from my wife, she does Facebook, and gets a lot of people talking about how much they love the book, and has really, really great reviews. A lot of people especially like the part when I talk about the split from SEPULTURA, because I really explains my side of the story, about how I really felt, and why I left my own band. And a lot of people, after they read that, they will understand. And, for them, it makes sense that I did what I did, that I left SEPULTURA. They would have done the same. After they read it, they understand why I did it, and it makes sense after you read what I said about the split, you'd think that it was the rational thing to do, for me, was to leave them, you know. Even though it was my own band from the beginning, it was kind of like, all of my integrity, you know, and that's why I decided to leave. It's going to be great. It tells all of those stories, and puts kind of a final stamp on the whole "SEPULTURA split" shit, and talks about SOULFLY and how it was created, and how cool SOULFLY was building over the years, and the cool people I worked with. Sean Lennon is in the book, Corey Taylor [SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR] is in the book, all talking about how it was to work with me, and I think it's going to be great. I can't wait for people in America to read it. It's going to come out through a company called Jawbone. They're going to distribute the book in America.
RockMusicStar: I always wondered about the SEPULTURA thing. I always thought to myself, I mean, I don't know the all the little nuances about the spilt. That's why I'm looking forward to reading your book, but, I always wondered why you didn't just fire everyone from SEPULTURA, keep the name, and find replacements.
Video: SEPULTURA Members Join KORN On Stage To Perform ‘Roots Bloody Roots’
SEPULTURA members Derrick Green (vocals) and Andreas Kisser (guitar) joined KORN on stage last night (Saturday, October 19) to perform SEPULTURA's classic song "Roots Blooody Roots". Professionally filmed video footage of their appearance can be seen below (Note: Skip to around 47-minute mark.) Green wrote on Facebook afterwards: "What a cool surprise tonight rocking out 'Roots Bloody Roots' with KORN!! Too much fun!!"
KORN singer Jonathan Davis was featured as a guest on the track "Lookaway" — along withMike Patton of FAITH NO MORE — on SEPULTURA's 1996 album "Roots".
Speaking to ARTISTdirect, former SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera stated about the recording sessions for "Lookaway": "Mike Patton was on the song, and Jonathan's a hugeFAITH NO MORE fan. He was actually freaking out that Patton was there. He was really nervous, which was actually kind of funny. He kept chewing on his hair the whole time he was in the studio. [Producer] Ross Robinson teased him at one point and told him to calm down. [laughs]"
He continued: "'Lookaway' came out of a jam. It's a really heavy riff. Patton started singing this Indian chant, and it gave me goosebumps in the studio when he did that. It was so intense. He showed up in the studio with a Samsonite briefcase. I was like, 'Mike, what's up with the briefcase?' He said, 'It's what I need to record.' It had an echo pedal inside for his voice and a bottle of wine. He opened the wine and we drank it. At one point, the three of us were on the floor of the studio going crazy and making weird noises and sounds! Jonathantook it to another level. He's singing about people with a fear of pussy, which is a crazy concept. It came out as a really cool, obscure song on 'Roots'."
MAX CAVALERA’s ‘My Bloody Roots’ Autobiography To Be Made Available In Poland
According to Interia.pl, the Polish-language edition of "My Bloody Roots", the autobiography of Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SEPULTURA, NAILBOMB), will be made available on October 2 through the Kagra publishing house.
Already available in Max's native Brazil, "My Bloody Roots", written by Cavalera with assistance from renowned British author Joel McIver, was translated by Bartosz Donarski (who also translated "Slash", "Pearl Jam Twenty", "Lords Of Chaos", "Swedish Death Metal" and "Choosing Death: The Improbable History Of Death Metal & Grindcore", among others), a contributor to well-known Polish magazine Mystic Art, former perennial DJ of the longest-running metal radio show in Poland "Thrashing Madness", and editor of the major Polish Internet portal Interia.pl.
"My Bloody Roots"' foreword was written by Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS, ex-NIRVANA), who was' "really thrilled" to do it, Max said in an interview. "Dave's always been a great guy," Cavalera added. "He used to come to see SEPULTURA play in Seattle every time we played; even after NIRVANA got big, he would still come and see us play in little clubs." Among other musicians who were interviewed for Max's autobiography were Ozzy Osbourne, Chino Moreno of the DEFTONES, Tom Araya of SLAYER and Mike Patton of FAITH NO MORE.
