A Swedish appeals court last week reduced the prison sentence for NECROPHOBIC vocalist Tobias Sidegård, who was accused of beating his wife multiple times between September 2011 and April 2013. Sidegård was originally sentenced to 18 months in prison for "gross violation of a woman's integrity," and offense that was first introduced into the Penal Code in 1998 dealing with repeated punishable acts directed by men against women who have or have had a close relationship with the perpetrator. On September 20, the Svea appeals court found Sidegård guilty of simple assault — a less serious offense than "gross violation of a woman's integrity" — and reduced his prison sentence to six months. The musician was also ordered to pay his wife 16,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $2,500) in damages plus interest. Sidegård previously denied all charges through his attorney, claiming that the injuries suffered by Tobias' wife that were described in the indictment occurred in "other ways" than through physical abuse perpetrated by the musician. Tobias sent an e-mail to the Metal Insider and MetalSucks web sites earier in the month insisting that he was "set free after second appeal in higher court." "I've been fucking innocently accused and never hit a woman in my life," he wrote. The other members of NECROPHOBIC released a statement three weeks ago in which they declined to comment on the allegations against their singer — pointing out that the legal process was still "ongoing" — but stressed that they did "not condone domestic violence." In 2011, NECROPHOBIC was joined by guitarists Robert Sennebäck (DISMEMBER, UNLEASHED) and Fredrik Folkare (UNLEASHED). The band's current lineup is as follows: Joakim Sterner - Drums Tobias Sidegård - Vocals Alexander Friberg - Bass Robert Sennebäck - Guitar Fredrik Folkare – Guitar

Blasphemy And The Master Commented HELL's Kev Bower (guitar, keyboards, vocals): "The artwork for 'Curse And Chapter' is once again the result of our collaboration with artist Dan Goldsworthy and photographer Nigel Crane, who we first worked with on the 'Human Remains' album cover in 2011. "The digipak for this is one of the most complex pieces of CD/DVD packaging ever attempted by Nuclear Blast, and the concept for this was dreamed up by myself and Andy Sneap [guitar] whilst staggering back from the local pub late one night, after a 'heavy creativity session.' It was inspired by the rise in spiritualism in England during the 19th century, during which time séances and attempts to communicate with the dead became commonplace — along with the establishment of numerous secret cults and aristocratic organizations who would meet in secret, attempting to raise spirits and reach 'the other side.' We also wished to explore the phenomenon known as 'post-mortem photography.' "Because photography was very costly at the time, the only time ordinary families could justify the expense was after the subject was already dead. We became gripped by these macabre Victorian images of deceased family members and children being posed alongside their living families, often being supported in a standing position by equally macabre mechanical devices designed specifically for this gruesome purpose. The other major issue with spirit communication is that you never know who (or what) will 'come through' — and it was common for malevolent entities to create havoc in the séance room.

MIKE AMOTT Had ‘No Interest Or Belief’ In Making New CARCASS Album

In the October 2013 issue of Decibel magazine, bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker and guitarist Bill Steer of reactivated British extreme metal pioneers CARCASS spoke about the band's split with guitarist Michael Amott and drummer Daniel Erlandsson, who had been touring with CARCASS since the group's reunion was announced in 2007. "In all honesty, once Michael had stepped out of CARCASS again, that's when we could entertain the idea of doing the new record," Steer revealed. "He'd made it very clear from the outset that he'd no interest or belief in there being a new CARCASS record. It's really hard to tell if maybe he felt we were incapable of doing it, or if maybe he was just speaking out of loyalty to [his main band] ARCH ENEMY. I don't know. But once the reunion shows were over, Michael basically said, 'Look, I'm gonna be busy for a few years — you guys do whatever you're gonna do. That meant Jeff and I could talk seriously about doing new material, because neither of us were being pulled in another direction like Michael was. CARCASS had become our main band and had priority treatment." When Amott split, Erlandsson followed. "It's very much a package deal with those two because they're in the same band, and they've invested so much in it," Steer offered. "There's no way that either Jeff or I could condemn them for doing that because ARCH ENEMY is their thing — especially for Michael. It's a band that's made its name from his direction — obviously his lady [ARCH ENEMY singer Angela Gossow] is involved, and until recently his brother was. So, it's always gonna mean more to him than CARCASS, and we can understand that." "I wouldn't expect any different, honestly," Walker concurred. "ARCH ENEMY is Mike's band. So are SPIRITUAL BEGGARS. And CARCASS is our band. It just doesn't mean as much to him as it does to me and Bill. We've been doing this since we were 17. The best way I can put it is this: Any band that Bill or I play with — whether it's BRUJERIA, ANGEL WITCH or GENTLEMANS PISTOLS, CARCASS is our priority. With Mike, this would never be his priority." According to Walker, Amott changed his mind once he heard that Jeff and Bill were actively working on new material. "The reality is that Mike was very keen, more than anyone, for CARCASS to reunite," Jeff said. "A few years later. he wasn't keen for the reunion to continue, and he wasn't keen on the idea of CARCASS doing a new album. This is despite the fact that he contacted me, after we were a year into the songwriting, because he heard we were doing a new album, and indicated that he wanted to be involved. I think Bill had an exchange with Mike about this and gave Mike an opportunity to put his cards on the table, [but] it became clear that Mike wasn't really interested enough to walk away from any of the projects that he's involved in . And don't get me wrong — we've never expected that of anyone . But I think it could be fitted around each other's projects. I still do BRUJERIA, you know?"

MEGADETH’s DAVE MUSTAINE: Singing ‘Is Not My Strong Point’

Lewis and Floorwax of Denver, Colorado's classic rock radio station 103.5 The Fox recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH's Dave Mustaine (guitar, vocals) and David Ellefson (bass). You can now listen to the chat below. Asked how he first decided to become the lead singer in MEGADETH, Mustaine said: "Well, my pal here, Dave, and I were auditioning guys and we kind of ran out of patience. The last guy that auditioned as a vocalist came — and we were homeless at the time — and the guy rolled up with a 12-pack of beer, and we thought, 'Great!' Then we got a closer look at him and he had eyeliner on. And we figured, 'As soon as the last beer was down, he was out of the band.' It was New Year's Eve one night, and David just goes , 'Man, why don't you sing?' and I was like, 'Why don't you?' So I ended up doing it, and it stuck. I actually enjoy it a lot of times, but it's not my strong point. I've been working really hard at it the last few years. I wish I would have given it as much attention in the beginning as I do now… It's definitely a unique voice sound. You know, you hear people like Axl [Rose, GUNS N' ROSES] or myself or [James] Hetfield [METALLICA] or some of the other people that are really easily identifiable, it's scarce. Like Chris Cornell [SOUNDGARDEN], you hear Chris, you know it's him." MEGADETH has just completed its run as the headliner of this year's edition of Gigantour, the critically acclaimed package festival founded in 2005 by Mustaine. In addition to MEGADETH, this year's installment of Gigantour featured BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, DEVICE, HELLYEAH, NEWSTED and DEATH DIVISION. MEGADETH's latest album, "Super Collider", has sold 61,000 copies in the United States since its June 4 release. The CD arrived in stores via Mustaine's new label, Tradecraft, distributed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). It marks MEGADETH's first release since the band's split with Roadrunner Records.

I must admit I do not know the Aussie death metal scene at all. The only exception may be Psycroptic. When I was given the responsibility for this review I didn’t have any idea for what to expect. Portal though was a nice surprise.

BEHEMOTH Frontman Says New Album Is ‘Spectacular’

Polish extreme metallers BEHEMOTH have completed mixing their tenth full-length album, "The Satanist", for a fall release via Nuclear Blast in Europe and Metal Blade in North America. The CD was recorded at Hertzstudio in Bialystok, Poland with the help of the Wieslawscy brothers andDaniel Bergstrand (MESHUGGAH, IN FLAMES, SOILWORK, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD). Songtitles set to appear on the effort include "Blow Your Trumpet, Gabriel" — described by Darski as "killer" and "a monster";"Messe Noir" (French for "The Black Mass"); and "Ora Pro Nobis, Lucifer" (Latin for "Pray For Us, Lucifer"). Comments BEHEMOTH guitarist/vocalist Adam "Nergal" Darski: "I'm listening to the new mix of the album... and it's SPECTACULAR. If you can imagine something that beats the shit out of 'Evangelion', this is it! "We shall take another six months before we put it out... Sorry, but that's what it needs. Be patient. This album will shake the Mount Sinai!" In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Darski describedBEHEMOTH's new songs as "very atmospheric" and "very emotional." "Think BURZUM meets NEW ORDER meets KILLING JOKE," he added. But at the same time, fans shouldn't expect the album to sound too far removed from BEHEMOTH's past efforts. "Take SLAYER, for example,"Darski said. "Whatever genre they deal with, they still end up sounding like SLAYER. Even when they were flirting with nu-metal, it was aSLAYER record. Same with BEHEMOTH."
