DAVE LOMBARDO On SLAYER: ‘They Weren’t Really My Friends. They Were Just Business Partners’

Mark Dean of Myglobalmind webzine recently conducted an interview with former SLAYER and current PHILM drummer Dave Lombardo. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. Myglobalmind: Looking back over your extensive musical career, what have been the particular high and low points? Dave: Well, it fluctuates; up and down, you know. A low point was probably January of last year whenever [the most recent split] went down, you know, with SLAYER. It was leading up to that, you know, unfortunately. Well, not really leading up to it, because my bags were ready and packed to go [with the band to Australia for the Soundwave festival]. Myglobalmind: It still must be difficult for you on a personal level? As they were your friends, and people that you had grown up with. Dave: Yeah, it's strange. It's unfortunate as well, because I realize now that they weren't really my friends. They were just business partners. I lived and hung out with them, as if they were friends. "Wow, these guys are watching out for me," and it didn't quite turn out that way. Myglobalmind: How do you feel one year on? Has your attitude to the situation mellowed, or…? Dave: Yeah, I have, I am more, like, "Oh, well, shit happens." Move on, you know. Myglobalmind: Are you generally a modest person about your personal musical talent and ability? How do you deal, for example, with compliments. I read, for example, that Bill Ward [BLACK SABBATH] called you “one of the best drummers in metal"? Dave: Yeah, I am honored. First of all, I am honored to have Bill Ward as my friend. This is a guy that I looked at these albums and listened to this music, and played along to these albums as a child and a little kid. For me to know Bill, it is surreal, and it feels very odd, but it is awesome. Myglobalmind: How do you find being a working and touring musician in the Internet age? Is it more difficult to make a living? Dave: Well, it is. Myglobalmind: You can't do this full time? I have talked to other guys who have established careers and still have to take other jobs because life is difficult, and can't sustain a living solely from music. Dave: Well, the thing is you have to find other ways and get creative and find other ways to market your music and to recreate yourself. It's, like, once the Internet and the worldwide web came into the picture, everyone scrambled, and the first was the music industry, because everyone was downloading music, so they started scrambling ways to make a living. So you just have to get creative. Yeah, it is difficult. It's a little different. The royalties aren't the same from the physical CDs, but there are other avenues of income that you just need to sign up online and you will start receiving royalties on the songs that you have recorded. I never knew this until recently, about six months ago, and it was, like, "Woah, I got a nice check in the mail." All I did was just go online and register my name all the music that I did in my life that I have recorded. Myglobalmind: That you weren't aware of, that type of royalties thing? Dave: I was never aware of. Nobody told me, thank you fucking very much. Myglobalmind: What about your health over the years? Playing drums at the velocity and energy levels that you exhibit regularly on stage, has that had any adverse health effects? Dave: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Thank God. I've been healthy. The only things that have been wrong was I broke my leg and I had to stop for only about three weeks 'cause I got straight on the drums again. They said, "No, you gotta stay off the leg. No, no." I worked it up. Myglobalmind: It's in the blood, is it? Dave: Yeah, I just kept going and it was great. I wrote a song and it's on the new album, the new PHILM album, with a broken leg, so… But other than that, no. I drink a lot of water. I try to stay off the booze, although I like it, but there's limits. I try to eat right and I try to walk a lot. You could really become… You could grow stagnant. You could get very lazy if you don't stay active. Myglobalmind: Playing that type of music obviously is going to have that chance of health issues… Dave: I started PHILM, you know, when I noticed that [SLAYER], in a way, health-wise, was crumbling, not only with Jeff [Hanneman, guitar], but with Tom [Araya, bass/vocals] and Kerry [King, guitar] doesn't take care of himself. He should be careful. Well, I'm not going to tell him that… Myglobalmind: Nobody would tell him that. Dave: Nobody. And I'm not either. Myglobalmind: He's quite an imposing character, shall we say. Dave: Yeah, of course. He has a lot of insecurities. Read the

SCORPIONS Recording Cover Of RAINBOW’s ‘Temple Of The King’ For RONNIE JAMES DIO Tribute Album

SCORPIONS guitarist Matthias Jabs revealed in an interview with Classic Rock Revisited that his band is recording a cover version of RAINBOW's "Temple Of The King" for inclusion on the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album. The collection, which is being assembled by the singer's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio, will also tentatively include contributions from METALLICA, ANTHRAX, JUDAS PRIEST's Rob Halford, MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister, DEEP PURPLE's Ian Gillan, Alice Cooper, Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH), HALESTORM, Sebastian Bach (SKID ROW), Chris Jericho (FOZZY) and Dave Grohl (NIRVANA, FOO FIGHTERS). "I'm letting them pick what songs they wanna do in the way they wanna do it," Wendy told Artisan News in 2011. The Dio tribute album will see Grohl covering BLACK SABBATH's "The Mob Rules", Halford contributing a version of RAINBOW's "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" and HALESTORM delivering a rendition of DIO's "Straight Through The Heart". "We reached out to Wendy Dio about wanting to be a part of the Dio tribute that's getting put together," METALLICA singer James Hetfield told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine. "We're very honored to be a part of that, and to be a part of a celebration of Ronnie's life and his great contribution, man." In an interview with Guitar International, former ANTHRAX guitarist Rob Caggiano stated that the band's cover version of "Neon Knights" "came out pretty smoking." Ronnie James Dio, best known for his work with BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW and his own band DIO, died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.

Former SLAYER Drummer DAVE LOMBARDO: ‘There Is Absolutely No Friends When It Comes To Money’

Owais "Vitek" Wani of Metal Wani recently conducted an interview with former SLAYER and current PHILM drummer Dave Lombardo. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below. A couple of excerpts follow. On the status of the second PHILM album: Lombardo: "The second album was being written as we were mixing the first album. So at this point, we already have the second album written, recorded and we're just waiting for a record company. Mike Patton [FAITH NO MORE singer and owner of Ipecac Recordings, which released the first PHILM album, 'Harmonic'], from the record company Ipecac, he's only putting out three albums this year, and it's unfortunate that this one isn't one of them. He just had to scale back. Of course, the music industry isn't what it was anymore, so he had to scale back his [release schedule]. Which is all good; I totally understand. So right now I'm just shopping the record to several other companies and we'll see what happens. Hopefully it can be released as soon as possible. I'm getting really anxious to put this album out, because it's uniquely different than the other one. It's not as experimental as the first one. This particular album, the new one, the songs are a little more concise and straightforward, so there's not a lot of improvisation or a lot of places where the band decides to take off musically and improvise. So we kept it together this time on this record. And right now, as I speak, this album's done and we already have, like, five songs for the [third] record. I've got some really talented musicians, and we could come up with music fairly easy. So I'm excited about this new group." On BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward's recent kind words about Lombardo's playing: Lombardo: "It made me feel really, really good. Bill Ward and I, we've established a very nice relationship. We keep tabs on each other. I always ask him how he's doing, and he's in communication with me as well. So we have a nice little thing going on. He's just a nice friend, and I'm very happy to have met him recently. The first time that I met him was in 2004 on a BLACK SABBATH reunion, JUDAS PRIEST reunion… I think that was the first time… It was, like, a festival that SLAYER played. I met him way back then; it was very brief. And then we re-met about a year ago." On whether he has listened to the new BLACK SABBATH album, "13", and what his thoughts are on it: Lombardo: "No, I haven't. I heard, like, one song. I don't know… I just can't listen to BLACK SABBATH unless it's with Bill… It's one of those things that you wanna hear it, you wanna get into it, but ahhh… it would have been soooo much better if Bill Ward was there. I mean, it's not the first time — I think there was an album Carmine Appice… no, not Carmine… that Vinny Appice played on — and that's a fantastic record, but that hit me at a different time. I was more open to the possible changes within bands. Right now, just knowing a little bit of the SABBATH situation, I just really didn't have the interest to listen to that album. But I will one day, eventually. It's gonna cross my path. I just haven't purchased it." On late SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman being excluded from the list of faces and names showcased during Grammy Awards' "In Memoriam" segment this year: Lombardo: "Yeah, that was disappointing. But they're notorious for that. That organization is predominantly rap- and country-driven. And they don't wanna hear rock; they don't care about rock and metal. Metal, I think, is music for misfits, and it's played by misfits. And what do they wanna do with this kind of music? We wanna get recognized? They're not gonna do it. Let it be. Let it be. We don't need a doorstop. Metal doesn't need a doorstop or an organization to recognize who we are. We have our fans. Let the voice of the fans show how big metal is." On the most important lesson he has learned in his three decades as a professional musician: Lombardo: "There is absolutely no friends when it comes to money. That's the number one lesson I've learned."

CHIMAIRA: ‘Wrapped In Violence’ Video Released

CHIMAIRA's video for the song "Wrapped In Violence" can be seen below. The track is taken from the band's seventh studio album, "Crown Of Phantoms", which sold around 7,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 52 on The Billboard 200 chart. The record arrived in stores on July 30, 2013 via eOne Music. CHIMAIRA's previous CD, "The Age Of Hell", premiered with more than 7,000 units in August 2011 to debut at No. 54. The band's 2009 effort, "The Infection", registered a first-week tally of 15,000 to land at No. 30. This figure was roughly in line with the opening number of CHIMAIRA's 2007 album, "Resurrection", which shifted 16,000 copies to enter the chart at No. 42. CHIMAIRA made last year headlines by way of crowd-funding a fan version CD/DVD where they doubled their initial goal via IndieGoGo. "Crown Of Phantoms" track listing: 01. The Machine 02. No Mercy 03. All That's Left Is Blood 04. I Despise 05. Plastic Wonderland 06. The Transmigration 07. Crown Of Phantoms 08. Spineless 09. Kings Of The Shadow World 10. Wrapped In Violence 11. Love Soaked Death CHIMAIRA will kick off the "Celebrate The Chaos" tour this weekend. The trek will feature support from IWRESTLEDABEARONCE, OCEANO, REFLECTIONS and FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY. Comments CHIMAIRA vocalist Mark Hunter: "CHIMAIRA turned fifteen last August and the only appropriate way to celebrate the chaos is to hit the road. Take a trip through the entire catalog with us and rediscover old favorites in the new era of domination! Rise up! The time has come..." In an interview with Ghost Cult, Hunter stated about CHIMAIRA's new CD: "'Crown Of Phantoms' is the culmination of three years of going through tons of changes, harsh realities but also excitement. It's something brand new and when you put all those things together you get 'Crown Of Phantoms' as a result. These are exciting times for the band and it's the polar opposite of where I was with the band two years ago." Regarding whether he thought of packing it in after the numerous lineup changes that CHIMAIRA went through since the release of 2011's "The Age Of Hell", Hunter said: "Many people on the Internet thought we were done for. By the timing and the speed things were unraveling, I had the luxury of not thinking rationally and I simply soldiered on. It was happening so fast and not thinking about quitting was a sort of defense in a way. I defended what I hold dear and what I wanted to fight for. Of course there were moments of insecurity and doubts. Luckily, I had a good team and a good support system of friends and family around me telling me that I was crazy if I wanted to change the band name or quit altogether. They pointed out that bands like MEGADETH and BLACK SABBATH went through countless lineup changes. BLACK SABBATH had a super successful era without Ozzy. Of course, with MEGADETH, 'Rust In Peace' was one of their best albums and it wasn't recorded with the same lineup who did 'Peace Sells', which is another MEGADETH classic. There are more examples of bands that went through major lineup changes and still had major success. Of course, to be in this situation is scary as hell."

DOOMOCRACY: DEBUT ALBUM COMING SOON

Doomocracy is a doom metal band from Heraklion, Greece. The band was created by Minas Vasilakis on drums, Angelos Tzanis on guitar and Michael Stavrakakis on vocals. The three of them have been good friends and band mates for almost a lifetime. They started rehearsing together during the summer of 2011 to pay tribute to the doom metal scene and bands like Candlemass, Black Sabbath, Memento Mori and Solitude Aeturnus. After a few months they were joined by good friends and musicians, Manolis Sx on bass and Harry Dokos on guitar. Having completed the band’s line up and full of energy and inspiration, they rehearsed intensively to compose doom metal music from the heart. The ideas were floating and the first 4 songs were composed in less than 3 months. The band continued rehearsing while searching for a band name. They decided to call themselves Doomocracy. By the end of 2012 Doomocracy had completed composing the tracks for their debut album “the end is written” and started pre-production. At the same time they started looking for suitable places to record and mix their album. The band entered “Mad Hat Music” studio in Heraklion Greece, on July 2013 and finished recording on September 2013. Nikos Vogiatzakis was the sound engineer and his help and advice was a great asset to the final result. After many conversations with European studios and sound engineers, Doomocracy came to the decision to work with Daniel Bergstrand at "Dug Out Productions" in Uppsala Sweden, for the mixing of "the end is written". Daniel Bergstrand is an established metal producer that has worked with many great metal bands, such as Meshuggah, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir and Evergrey. The mixing process was complete on the 15th of October 2013, giving Doomocracy that raw, powerful and heavy sound they were looking for. Tailor Maid music production and Peter In De Betou was Doomocracy's 1st choice for the Mastering of "the end is written". Peter is an expert when it comes to Mastering. He has worked with countless metal bands such as Morgana Lefay, Memento Mori, Entombed and so many more. Peter did a fantastic job, giving Doomocracy's debut album, a production worthy of the effort and passion the band has given to produce this album. Doomocracy is currently looking for a record label while rehearsing to bring their music to the public.

Not only a commercial success, the album also earned positive reviews around the world for the beautiful brutality of its all-out sonic assault. This year marks the 20th anniversary of that landmark album and Rhino is celebrating with a special two-disc version that includes a newly remastered version of the album, along with a live performance from the 1994 Monsters Of Rock festival. "Richard is an incredible artist and we have brainstormed some kick-ass ideas that I cannot wait to execute. "This album is going to knock you all out. I guarantee it. "I could not be happier or more proud of this record. I can't wait for you all to hear it!" Sebastian managed to involve in the writing and recording some very special friends and guest stars, including none other than Duff McKagan (VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N' ROSES), and not one but two top-class guitar players: John 5 (MARILYN MANSON, ROB ZOMBIE) and Steve Stevens (BILLY IDOL). Rounding out the lineup on the CD are Devin Bronson (AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK) on guitar and Bobby Jarzombek (HALFORD, RIOT, FATES WARNING) on drums. OZZY OSBOURNE Thought He Would Lose His Family During Drug Relapse

According to The Pulse Of Radio, Ozzy Osbourne has opened up in a new interview with the U.K.'s NME about his relapse into drug and alcohol abuse last year as well as his temporary separation from wife and manager Sharon Osbourne. Ozzy revealed last April that he had been abusing drugs and alcohol for 18 months, which led Sharon to move out of their home until he took steps to get sober again. He eventually did and the couple reconciled. The BLACK SABBATH frontman revealed that when Sharon found out he was using drugs again, "She was very pissed off. I thought I was gonna lose my family at one point . . . She just said, 'Look, I've got my own thing going on, and I can't deal with you any more. Get the fuck out. Sort yourself out, then we'll talk.' I don't blame her in the slightest." Asked what triggered his relapse, Ozzy said, "For no reason at all, you'll suddenly think, 'I fancy a drink,' and your head will say, 'Let yourself have one.' Next thing you know you're scraping yourself off the garage floor three days later . . . it's a disease of the mind and body, and you can't control it." Ozzy was using drugs and alcohol during the recording sessions for BLACK SABBATH's reunion album, "13," although bandmates Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler revealed a few days ago that they were shocked at the time to find out from Sharon that Ozzy had fallen off the wagon. "13" was the first SABBATH album since 1978 to feature Ozzy, Iommi and Butler recording together. The album came out in June and went No. 1 in several countries, including the U.S. where it became the group's first-ever chart-topper.

URIAH HEEP To Enter Studio In January

On November 12, Metal-Trails.com conducted an interview with guitarist Mick Box of progressive rockers URIAH HEEP before the band's concert in Hamburg, Germany. You can now watch the chat below. Originally founded by Mick Box in 1969, URIAH HEEP is truly one of the pivotal classic acts that helped define the rock sound and an era. Part of the fabled "Big Four" alongside LED ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH and DEEP PURPLE, the HEEP story still has a long way to go. With classic songs like "Lady In Black", "Gypsy", "Easy Livin'" and "Stealin'" full of ambition, sophisticated writing, memorable tunes and, of course, the vocals — the five-part harmonies were a clear influence on the operatics of QUEEN. URIAH HEEP was the first Western rock band to perform in Russia, they have headlined at stadiums worldwide: truly they've ensured their place at rock's top table. With Mick Box always at the helm, URIAH HEEP tours all over the world and is one of music's most exciting and reliable live acts.
