LAMB OF GOD Frontman Launches Blog For ‘Dark Days’ Book

Da Capo Press will release LAMB OF GOD vocalist Randy Blythe's memoir, "Dark Days: My Tribulation And Trials", later this year. Random House has purchased the foreign rights to the book and will act as publisher in the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The memoir, which puts emphasis on the past year of Randy's life, is an incredible, harrowing, heartbreaking, and redemptive story told in Blythe's already well-recognized writing style. Blythe has launched the official blog for "Dark Days: My Tribulation And Trials" at this location. His first blog entry reads as follows: "Obviously (as the name of this blog will lead the more astute amongst you to deduce), this is the official blog of my upcoming book, 'Dark Days', scheduled for publication later in this year of our lord, 2014. I even state that fact in greater detail over in the 'about the author' section (the little box to the left of this post), just in case there is any confusion about what in the hell is going on here. In that box it also says 'PROCESS. PRODUCTION. PUBLICATION.' That is because those are the three phases the life of this book will go through, and the three phases in which this blog will be chronologically updated. More on that shortly. "First, a brief explanation about myself and the basis of my book for those of you who are unfamiliar with me or the recent events that have occurred in my life during the last year and a half or so. "My name is D. Randall Blythe, known to most simply as Randy. I make my living singing for the four-time-Grammy-losing international touring heavy metal act LAMB OF GODWe've been around for almost twenty years now, have several critically acclaimed albums (well, at least by a few critics at a couple of metal magazines), and have played on every continent on earth except Antarctica. It's a good life. I am also a sober alcoholic who hasn't touched a drink or a drug (other than caffeine and nicotine) for well over three years as of this writing. "For twenty-two years, I drank herculean amounts of alcohol (and drugged on the side just to make sure I was truly screwing myself up) in an attempt to alter reality to the point where I could deal with it. Surprise, surprise — that strategy did not work. That was NOT a good life, and I barely survived it. I'm much better now. "Everything was going just hunky-dory until about a year and a half ago. "On June 27, 2012 my band flew from Norway to the Czech Republic to play a show. Upon landing in Prague, we were met at the end of the jetway by five masked and heavily armed large men in body armor, along with four plainclothes detectives. To the immense surprise of my bandmates and myself, I was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter concerning the death of a LAMB OF GOD fan. "We had played Prague two years previously, and unbeknownst to any of us, a young man had sustained an injury to the head during our show, dying a month later. The police said that I was the cause of that injury. I was promptly incarcerated and spent the next thirty-seven days in a 123-year-old crumbling prison on the outskirts of Prague. "After a long and complex process during which my band had to borrow almost half a million bucks, I was released on bail and returned to the United States. Instead of hiding like a coward in the U.S., safe from extradition (the U.S. government had refused to cooperate with the Czechs after they requested assistance in investigating me immediately after the young man died. My government also did not deem it necessary to inform me that I was a wanted man in a foreign country. Your tax dollars at work.), I returned to Prague in early 2013 to stand trial. I did this for several reasons, first and foremost being I felt the family of this young man deserved some answers, and I was the only one who could provide them. I felt it unethical to hide from my problems while they grieved the loss of their son. As the father of a dead daughter, I understood their pain in a very visceral way. I had tried to hide from my problems for over twenty years by crawling into a bottle. I do not live that way anymore, so to hide from this would have been intolerable for me. I believe it would have lead me back to the drink, and from there, I would have surely died. "On March 5, 2013, I was found not guilty and acquitted of all charges. I have remained a free man every since. "This book will tell that story, the whole story, for the first time ever. I'm the only one who lived it, so I'm the only one capable of telling it. However, the tale of my arrest, incarceration, release, and trial are merely the vehicle I will be using to convey what I feel is an important message in today's fast-paced, high-tech, self-centered world. "I have something to say, and life has presented me with a tragic way to illustrate my point without being preachy or pedantic. "I will not moralize or shout from some ludicrous ethical pedestal (I didn't win the Olympics or cure cancer, I went to prison, for Pete's sake) — I just want to relate how I got through a very scary time and came out with my head held high. I think there is a lesson of value in the telling of my story, if only for myself. Therefore I will write it, and I hope some of you will read it." The rights to Blythe's book were sold to Da Capo executive editor Ben Schafer by Marc Gerald at The Agency Group. "While I've dreamed of being a published author almost since I began to read, I never imagined my first book would center around such a sad topic," said Blythe. "Sometimes though, life unexpectedly provides you a story that needs to be told. I believe this one does (for several different reasons, not just for the benefit of myself), so I will tell it with the respect and dignity all involved deserve. This will be a good read, I promise you, and I h

Report: Red Fang + Support Acts – Athens, Greece

It seems to me that these days stoner rock/sludge metal is going up. Bands like Clutch, Kyuss, Orange Goblin are gaining more and more fans each and every day. And many of us didn’t see it coming, but there you have it! Friday night was going to be another stoner party for the Athenians! Red Fang, after only eight months since their last appearance in Athens with Cancer Bats, decided to do another gig along with fellow Americans The Shrine and Lord Dying. I showed up at the venue a bit early. The doors opened on time at about 8:30 and the few of us that were there chose our spots and got comfortable. The fact that by the time Lord Dying were about to start the number of people hadn’t increased had me a bit worried. Thankfully though, I was proven wrong later on. And cue for the first band of the night! Lord Dying took the stage and without wasting time begun their set. I must admit that I wasn’t familiar with them before the live, and I’m guessing that this goes for many attendants, but they did quite a decent job, warning up the few of us. Even though the sound wasn’t on their side, their interesting mix of sludge/doom with kind of thrash vocals kept us going for forty minutes, with songs from their debut album “Summon The Faithless”. Fifteen minutes break and I was ready for The Shrine. Rock n roll with punk rhythms, the trio from California was certainly a blast! With better sound and bigger crowd below them, The Shrine rocked us well with songs from the debut album “Primitive Blast” as well as from the upcoming “Bless Off”. Singer/guitarist Josh Landau even started joking about their previous show in Athens, when they ended up in a police department. Eventually we found out that the police officers didn’t like Judas Priest (the horror!), but they did like Manowar, and Landau dedicated to them “Bless Off”. Forty minutes later, they closed their set with the new “Nothing Forever”, with pits forming in the crowd and with the impressions and expectations for the future. The hour had finally come. With a brand new album released, Red Fang paid a visit to Greece for the fourth time, for those unlucky ones who were unable to see them in June. And once again they caused havoc! Yelling, crowd-surfing, mosh pits, broken cymbals, the show had it all! The start was powerful with “Hank Is Dead”, “Voices Of The Dead” and “DOEN” triggering the enthusiasm. And the band showed why their live shows have the impact they do. They gave their best self (even though the sound was a bit off in the beginning and I couldn’t hear the vocals most of the time from the spot where I was standing), headbanging like crazy, guiding the crowd when needed, joking around about their songs of sharks, birds, dogs and other beings of the animal kingdom. “Number Thirteen”, “Dirt Wizard”, “Shark”, “Crows In Swine”, “Blood Like Cream” and “Wires” were a few of the songs that were played that night. Around half an hour past midnight the show was about to end with nothing else but “Good To Die” and “Prehistoric Dog”, among the cheering and applauding of approximately 600 fans.

DEATH ANGEL: ‘Left For Dead’ Video Released

"Left For Dead", the new video from San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL, can be seen below. The clip was directed by Tommy Jones, who has previously worked with SOILWORK and TESTAMENT, among others. "Left For Dead" is taken from DEATH ANGEL's seventh album, "The Dream Calls For Blood", which sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 72 on The Billboard 200 chart. DEATH ANGEL's previous CD, "Relentless Retribution", opened with 2,700 units in September 2010. The band's 2008 effort, "Killing Season", registered a first-week tally of around 2,300. This number was in line with the performance of its predecessor, "The Art of Dying", which premiered with around 2,100 copies back in May 2004. Released on October 11, 2013 in Europe (except for the U.K. where it arrived three days later) and October 15, 2013 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records, "The Dream Calls For Blood" was recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER), and once again features cover art by Brent Elliot White (JOB FOR A COWBOY, CARNIFEX, WHITECHAPEL). Comments DEATH ANGEL guitarist Rob Cavestany: "[The 'Left For Dead' video] is comprised of footage filmed at AudioHammer Studios in Florida during the recording of the album. "Catch a glimpse into our world in the recording studio as we create, collaborate, lay down tracks and attempt to survive the insane madness of making a DEATH ANGEL album! "Hope you enjoy this little morsel that we proudly serve up to you as an appetizer. Catch the main course when we hit your town on tour which kicks off this Thursday! Eight weeks across North America — plenty of chances to feast upon us... "Bon appétit and see you in the pit!" METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett on "The Dream Calls For Blood": "DEATH ANGEL have gone big yet again and delivered an album that is so incredibly fast, brutal and blister burning heavy — it's a classic earspank, for sure! Every song is a slice of heavy metal heaven and I'm very impressed — it's the best album I've heard in 2013!"

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY recently amicably parted ways with longtime guitarist Nick Catanese and replaced him with Dario Lorina (LIZZY BORDEN). BLACK LABEL SOCIETY mainman Zakk Wylde recently told Guitar World magazine about Catanese's departure: "I had called Nick to tell him about the album and he told me that he was already knees deep into doing his own thing and wanted to stick 1,000 percent into it. I told him it was cool and that we loved him and that he'd always have a home here." He continued: "The thing is no one ever gets kicked out or fired. If you want to go, you're always able. Now we've got [guitarist] Dario Lorina in the band, and not only is he a kick-ass guitar player who can shred, but he's also a really cool dude." Asked how he hooked up with Dario, Zakk said: "We never do a cattle call or anything like that. With the amount of awesome players I know, it's more of a word-of-mouth kind of thing. I had him come out to the Vatican [Zakk's home studio] to meet him, and afterwards I said, 'Cool. If you want to do it, you're in.' It was as simple as that." Wylde also spoke about what fans can expect to hear on "Catacombs Of The Black Vatican". "I think everyone can expect a lot of fun and excitement," he laughed. "It was like what Chris Farley did in that one skit, where he was selling that hair-care product. Make sure you always use the word 'fun' when you describe it. [laughs]! "Someone asked me what the difference was between this new record and the other nine. I told them that it's basically all of the songs we used on the other nine records, except they've got different titles now. [laughs] It's fun and exciting for the whole family!" "Catacombs of the Black Vatican" is BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's first new studio album since 2009's "The Order Of The Black", which debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 chart. BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's live DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video, "Unblackened", was released on September 24, 2013 by Eagle Rock Entertainment. Wylde's label home, eOne Music, also released the audio version of the "Unblackened" DVD under the same name.

Report: Thrashers United IV – Athens, Greece

"Thrashing and slamming like hell in the pit Tomorrow they know may not come Banging and moshing like they don't give a shit To the rapid beat of the drum" (D.R.I. - Thrashard) "Don't start to cry if you get a black eye Just dive back in and give another try But too much action may leave you in traction So you better get insurance no matter your endurance" (Exodus - The Toxic Waltz) Those words by those Thrash legends could pretty much sum up the Thrashers United event going on for the fourth time in 5 years! Exarsis, Bio-Cancer, Chronosphere, Fadom and Domination were there to show what the new breed of Thrash has to offer. A fully packed 7Sins awaited some of the most popular bands of the scene. The 16-year old phenomenon called Domination took the stage first to show what they're made of. They played mostly material from their well-known so far "The Sacred Matrix" mini-CD (I Am Your God, Crisis, Death And Decay) in the style of Sepultura, Pantera and Slayer as well as newer stuff off the upcoming full length "Infants Of Thrash" (playing the blistering title track and one more I can't recall) creating the first mosh pits and stagedives (the writer being one of them!), giving it all for the crowd that set the tempo for the bands to come. Coming up next we have Fadom, the honored band of the event releasing their debut full-length "Pantophobia" that day. The band decided to play that album in its entirety in a mixed ordered starting off with "Massive Destruction" making things even more violent in the pit including a surfboard for stagediving and plastic bananas (yes you heard it correct: two surfboards for all the maniac stagedivers). Songs played off that album were the title track, "Heavenfall", "Thrash Bandicoot", the anthemic "Thrasholution",

MEGADETH’s DAVID ELLEFSON: ‘My Life With Deth’ EPK Available

A two-minute EPK (Electronic Press Kit) on MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson's autobiography, "My Life With Deth", can be seen below. The autobiography of Ellefson, co-founder and bassist of 11-time Grammy-nominated heavy metal titans MEGADETH, was made available on October 29 via Howard Books. Ellefson's memoir, "My Life With Deth", chronicles the story of Ellefson's fall into addiction during the band's early years, followed by his subsequent recovery and the return to faith which championed the band's rise to fame over the past several decades. The book was written withJoel McIver, the bestselling author of 21 books on rock music, and features a foreword byAlice Cooper. World rights to "My Life With Deth" were sold to Philis Boultinghouse atHoward Books by agent Lisa Gallagher at Sanford J. Greenburger Associates. Since 1983, the celebrated metal band MEGADETH has sold more than 20 million albums, received eleven Grammy nominations, and built a fan base of millions. Still going strong, they recently toured the world with METALLICA, ANTHRAX and SLAYER. Now, in "My Life With Deth", Ellefson tells the whole behind-the-scenes story of the band and his personal journey from suffering to salvation. At first glance, Ellefson's history reads like a how-to manual of excess, from hardcore drugs to X-rated debauchery. But Ellefson goes much deeper, taking us on a gripping journey from his Lutheran upbringing as a Minnesota farm boy, through the culture shock he experienced when he arrived in Los Angeles and entered the music industry, to his drug-fueled MEGADETH days, and finally how he beat his addictions and embarked on a path of sobriety and faith, entering a new life of Christian devotion. Today, studying to become a Lutheran pastor, Ellefson presides over MEGA Life! Ministries, a foundation that reaches hundreds of churchgoers every week. Ellefson says: "My autobiography is not the usual tale of rock 'n' roll woe, but rather something I hope will truly inspire people. I have dedicated my life to my craft, and I wanted to share the story of how a kid with a bass guitar and the dream of rock stardom literally risked it all to move from the farm in Minnesota to Los Angeles, and with a lot of hard work, sacrifice and a little luck along the way, made the dream come true. I think the readers will enjoy the stories, as well as the hardships, of this way of life as a musician and artist. I've been very open about my life's obstacles and the means by which I overcame them. Now, my hope is that this story will inspire others to follow their dreams and really live out the purpose for their lives, too.” The book features contributions from Kerry King (SLAYER), Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), Ellefson's current bandmate in MEGADETH Shawn Drover and also former colleagues Chris Poland andMarty Friedman. In addition to numerous gold and platinum records, David is the author of the book "Making Music Your Business" and has two metal bass guitar instructional DVDs through Rock House Method entitled "Metal Bass Vol. 1" and "Vol. 2". He is also a featured bass clinician, keynote speaker and panelist on the subject of music and the music industry.

Video: GHOST-Inspired Burger Generates Controversy

According to the Chicago Tribune, a burger inspired by the Swedish occult rock band GHOSThas been causing a lot of controversy since it was first introduced by the Chicago restaurantKuma's Corner. The "Ghost Burger" — a 10 ounce goat and beef patty made with a red wine reduction and topped with an unconsecrated communion wafer — has offended some people because they believe that it's in "poor taste" to have a communion wafer on a burger. "In the spirit of our undying reverence for the lord and all things holy, we give you the Ghostwhich we think is a fitting tribute to the supreme blasphemous activities carried out by the band itself," reads a post on the Kuma's Corner Facebook page. Luke Tobias, the director of operations for Kuma's Corner, admitted to the Chicago Tribunethat "people have been kind of upset" about the burger, but added: "The thing with this is, the communion wafer is unconsecrated, so until that happens, it's really just a cracker." "It's not a commentary on the state of religion or anything like that," Tobias added. "It's literally, 'We like this band; we think what they do is cool.'" The "Ghost Burger" costs $17 and is served on a pretzel bun and includes braised goat shoulder, aged white cheddar cheese and Ghost chile aioli. Jeff Young, producer of the Catholic Foodie blog, told the Chicago Tribune: "It's not the Eucharist, but it's still symbolic. For us as Catholics, the Eucharist is more than a symbol, it's a sacrament. At the same time, it doesn't mean that symbols aren't important. … It is a mockery of something that is holy. The same thing could be said of the band itself." The members of GHOST dress in religious robes and wear skeleton face makeup. Check out a video report from NBC Chicago below.
