METALLICA frontman James Hetfield and ex-VAN HALEN singer Sammy Hagar held their Acoustic-4-A-Cure concert on Sunday night (May 15) at The Fillmore in San Francisco. The event saw Hetfield perform an acoustic version of “Motorbreath”, a song that first appeared on METALLICA‘s 1983 album “Kill ‘Em All”, as well as METALLICA‘s “The Unforgiven” and a cover of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic “I Put a Spell on You”.

The third annual “Acoustic-4-A-Cure” concert benefiting the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital also featured appearances by Joe Satriani, Melissa Etheridge, John Mayer, TRAIN frontman Pat Monahan, Vic Johnson and Kris Kristofferson.

Lucky attendees who were able to snag a VIP ticket, for 500 bucks, got the chance to meet the artists and scored a gift bag, among other perks.

“Acoustic-4-A-Cure” was created by Bay Area rock legends Hagar and Hetfield, whose vision was to raise needed funds and awareness for the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF by bringing together some of their legendary friends and throwing a must-see concert for fans. In past years, artists including Billie Joe Armstrong, Jerry Cantrell, Pat Monahan, Linda Perry, Chad Smith, Adam Sandler, Joe Satriani, Nancy Wilson, and more have joined Hagar and Hetfield to rock the sold-out benefit concerts.

“If you write a check, it’s fine, but you don’t feel anything. I prefer to donate my time,” Hagar told SF Gate. “You go there, and you play music, and your fans pay to see you. You take the money, and you give it to this thing. There’s no silent auction. We’re not going to show you pictures of babies dying. We’re not going to have doctors up there giving you these big long speeches that bum you out. It’s a fucking concert. Just come and enjoy the show.”

Rolling Stone said Acoustic-4-A-Cure “delivered on its promise of once-in-a-lifetime musical moments, duets, jams and surprise guests” and The San Francisco Chronicle stated, “from the moment the doors opened at the venue… more than anything else it felt like a great big party among friends.”
