The third day of Germany’s Rock Am Ring festival was canceled after dozens of people were injured by lightning strikes over the weekend.
Performances at the event were suspended on Saturday during another thunderstorm, forcing many of the 92,000 fans at the open-air event to shelter in cars and tents.
Organizers vowed to resume the open-air event the next day but ended up canceling it after local authorities revoked the festival’s license to ensure the safety of fans.
Fans at the festival site — at the airport in the town of Mendig, near the Nürburgring motor racing track and about 62 miles west of Frankfurt — were told to clear the festival grounds by noon on Sunday.
At least 80 fans were hurt after heavy thunderstorms plagued the festival site Friday night, with one person having to be resuscitated after lightning hit the event. That man remained in hospital, according to the German Red Cross.
BLACK SABBATH was due to close the event tonight with a headline set.
Last year, at least 33 people were injured when lightning struck the Rock Am Ring festival twice.
