Quoting Monty Pythons: “And now for something completely different”. One of those bands that together with Nickelback, Shinedown, Alter Bridge and so on, showed us how modern rock music can break into the mainstream. 3 DOORS DOWN, the successful alternative rock band from the US, having hits like “Kryptonite” and “Here Without You”, have returned this year with a new album “Us And The Night“.
The album kicks in with “The Broken”, an up-beat rocker with really strong chorus, perfect to open gigs during promo tour! “In The Dark” follows, getting it all groovier, with a killer riff. And this is the point where I have to point out, that they’re definitely a different band, from the one I remembered back then. Heavier, groovier, and personally, I truly enjoyed it. Time to speed things up, a bit, with the up-beat rocker “Still Alive”, with a killer party feel all over the song. Keeping up the speed “Believe It” and “Living In Your Hell” follow, with an 80s feeling all over the place, but with a modern approach.
Next, it’s time for the piano-driven ballad of the album called “Inside Of Me”, and as it seems, they’ve got another hit ballad going on here. Coming up next, there’s the acoustic semi-ballad called “I Don’t Wanna Know” with a really sweet solo (there’s lots of those all over the album). “Pieces Of Me”, is more of a contemporary acoustic ballad, with some leads spicing it up. The album’s tempo is picked up once more, with “Love Is A Lie”, a sort of bitter break-up rocker. Let’s get back into the party mood with the title track, which has a really tasty verse riff and a really nice hook on the chorus. “Fell From The Moon”, is closing the album, a third ballad, the sappiest of the three, but not bad at all.
Thirty seven minutes of a really good rock album, having one foot in the old school era and the other in the modern sound, passing equally to both types of audiences. I have to say, this album came out of nowhere for me, well done 3 DOORS DOWN!
