Keyboard-player, vocalist, songwriter and producer NEAL MORSE strikes back with another release, coming from his solo band this time!
Unleashing his bandmates – Mike Portnoy (drums), Randy George (bass), Eric Gillette (guitars), Bill Hubauer (keyboards) – and their creativity this time to create “The Grand Experiment”.
Changing the formula of everything being pre-arranged by himself or the bands, this is Morse’s first attempt to enter the studio completely unaware of what the songs would sound like!
The band got the chance to jam every single note on this record from start to finish, in order to capture the creativity of each player as well as their spontaneous interaction within the recording sessions. Quite a Grand Experiment but I’d say rather successful.
Despite my not being very fond of Mr. Morse’s prog rock, this whole situation of 5 incredible musicians answering and forming music out of nothing, really is far more than interesting by itself even if their music direction or background is already on track!
Including one track of 26 minutes length “Alive Again” and five more of lesser length my belief is, the way every participant interacted on this release really unfolded many aspects of their mastery on their respective instruments as well as their geniuses to the needs of a well balanced smoothly flowing record.
