And again we had to wait a bit to see the monster called Deeds OF Flesh release another album. This time we had to wait five years, but the waiting was worth it. “Portals To Canaan” is the 8th full length offering of these Californian dudes. I cannot say more for a band like Deeds Of Flesh as an introduction. Their history and music speaks for themselves. It is really great to see giant bands like Deeds Of Flesh making albums of this dynamics after so many years. These guys are present to the death metal scene for almost 20 years. And “Portals To Canaan” is a monumental album.

When the first song “Amidst The Ruins” started and the intro riff was blown out of my speakers I was thrilled. This song could easily be a masterpiece of death metal. The main riff is so tight and ravishing the same time. The rhythm is so catchy that it stuck in your head for a long long time. And this kind of riffs is present from the very beginning of the album till the very end of it. You cannot do without headbanging all the time in each and every song.

It is like DOF knew this and they rest our necks with some breaks. The one minute outro on “Entranced In Decades Of Psychedelic Sleep” and the intro on “Celestial Serpents” are the perfect examples. So it is the instrumental with the bizarre double title “Caelum Hirundines Terra / The Sky Swallows The Earth”. Those parts are consisting of some alien voices and extraterrestrial sounds that have connection with the lyrical concept of the album. The past themes of blood and death are not present in this CD. In their place Erik Lindmark recounts to us some conspiracy theory for an apocalyptic extraterrestrial form of life that humanity tries to escape it from some “Portals To Canaan”. And he does that with his absolutely brilliant voice.

The drumming of Mike Hamilton is excellent once more. He keeps the whole structures tight without ever let it loose. The drums are following the rhythm guitar magnificently and the final result is that of unleashing hell.

The other two musicians that complete the line up are Craig Peters and Ivan Munguia on lead guitars and bass respectively. I have encountered them in my review for Arkaik. Then I was excited with their skills. And still I am. They are really talented musicians and give 100 % of their talent in this CD. Especially Mr. Munguia is a great bass player and you can listen to it on the most of the songs. Both of them I believe they have some contribution to the technical aspect of this album.

There are a lot of songs that can be highlights. But I cannot pull out one or two. I love “Portals To Canaan” as a whole creation. Even the cover song of “Orphans Of Sickness” from Gorguts is excellent as a tribute. Deeds Of Flesh are back for good. Absolutely this is one of the best albums for 2013. Do not hesitate to purchase it.
