The cycos are back. One of the pioneers in the field of crossover thrash metal alongside with D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies are back! The band made well known for their amazing live performances and sociopolitical lyrics (remember that legendary video for “Institutionalized” starring Tom Araya as well?) and left many classics such as “Suicidal Tendencies” (1983), “Join The Army” (1987), “How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today” (1988) and “Lights Camera Revolution” (1990) for younger bands to draw inspiration from. Also one of the first Thrash bands to incorporate funk grooves into their music.

Their new album simply titled “13“, brings the band back to action after the “Free Your Soul…And Save My Mind” (2000). It kicks of with the groovy “Shake It Up” showing the bands good mood and trademark let’s-fuck-shit-up attitude early on. The Thrash dance continues with “Smash It” that after its funky intro comes in full speed with top notch thrash riffage and soloing, making sure that it will create some chaos in the mosh pits. “This Ain’t A Celebration” is another trademark fast Suicidal Tendencies song keeping up the pace of the record passing the energy and intensity to the listener with a great lead in the chorus.

The album slows down with “God Only Knows Who I Am” with its funky groove and chorus followed by a great solo. The next track “Make Your Stand (With Conviction)” starts off with groovy headbanging riffage and a superb bass break in the middle leading into a Thrash part then back to the main riff and ends with a Thrashy part. One of the longest and best songs of the record. The groove continues with the mid tempo thrasher “Who’s Afraid” including great soloing and a memorable chorus. Back to the speed with “Show Some Love…Tear It Down” a rockin’ mid tempo Thrasher with a little break before the final chorus. After that comes the fast and furious “Cyco Style” showing that it will open up many crazy mosh pits in their live shows.

Then comes “Slam City” slowly at the beginning to go into a headbanging mid tempo Thrasher and speed up in the end making it another favorite on the record. “Till My Last Breath” starts mellow and ballad-esque to go on in a more groovy and rockin pace and a funky part towards the end before the chorus. Another rockin’ Thrasher comes with “Living The Fight” including some more awesome soloing. “Life…(Can’t Live With It, Can’t Live Without It)” starts in a Thrashy way only to go on in a more funky way including a groovy chorus.

The album ends with “This World“, starting off with a groove and solo over it, rockin out in a more loose way. Suicidal Tendecies wrote a diverse album filled with well balanced Thrash moments and Funky elements with every member of the band showing their best (especially Tim Williams’ performance is just exceptional). Now we can just wait to kick some asses Cyco Style at Rockwave festival July 8th with At The Gates and Iced Earth!
