There is an island in the south east end of this world called Australia. In my mind it is known for kangaroos and AC/DC. I couldn’t expect that I will get an album from this far country to review. Especially on a death metal album. Well these Tasmanian Devils proved me wrong.

This is the first CD I listened to from Psycroptic. So I could not compare to their previous four (!) albums. These four guys declare they play technical death metal. And with the two first tracks they convince me that this is indeed true. Without any effort I found my neck caught in the net of their rhythm.

The two introductory songs are full of inspiration. Their melodies are great and not incomprehensible. The riffs are really catchy. What else could anyone ask from a technical death metal band? The tempo has variations from mid tempo to full speed attack; you can listen to “Forward To Submission” and to “From Scribes To Ashes” so you can see for yourself. The riffs have a Meshuggah alike feeling sometimes. Without any accusation of ripping Meshuggah off, I really enjoy their melodies. The vocals are the only thing in their work that makes remarkable contrast on my taste. There are some moments that the singer, Jason Peppiatt, seems closer to a hardcore singer than a death metal one. That’s the only handicap I could find on this album. But in the general idea this album made me want to listen more of these Australian dudes.

The highlights of the album, except of the two first songs, are “Unmasking The Traitors” and the two songs with an acoustic introduction. These are “Deprivation” and “Euphorinasia”. The acoustic intros on these songs are out of words. And last but not least the final track, “The Sleepers Have Awoken”, made me want to take notice of Psycroptic more seriously from now on.

In conclusion I must confess that from this moment I am a “Carrier of the Plague”. This CD has excellent played compositions. Extraordinaire riffs and tempo from the start till the end that makes your head banging till there is no tomorrow. Great work from a land far away; where death lies on the smallest things.
